Episode 7: Audio Feedback

For our latest podcast we’ll be looking some examples of using audio recordings as a way of providing feedback to students on their work.  Asun Solano (Dept of European Studies and Modern Languages) describes her project using audio to provide feedback to Spanish language students and Hedley Bashforth (Dept of Social and Policy Sciences) talks about recording and delivering audio feedback on student performance in mock exams.   We discuss what audio feedback can offer, the practicalities of recording and delivering audio files through Moodle, and how to ensure your audio feedback is as effective as possible.

Episode 6: Panopto Lecture Capture

In this podcast we’ll be looking at the use of Panopto Lecture Capture here at the University of Bath.  Sacha Goodwin (AV Recorded Media Production Manager) and Nitin Parmar (Learning Technologist) talk with us about last year’s pilot of Lecture Capture and about plans to extend the service for the upcoming academic year.  We investigate what lecture capture can offer for learning and teaching, and ideas for integrating it with your current practice.

Episode 5: Open Educational Resources (OER)

This month we look at Open Educational Resources (OER) with Momna Hejmadi, Senior Fellow in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry.  We’ll be talking about her involvement in a JISC/HEFCE  funded project through the UK Centre for Bioscience where resources created at the University of Bath have been shared openly with the wider academic community.

The e-Learning Team will be taking a break from podcasting over the summer and will return in October 2010.

This month we investigate QR codes in education and talk with Andy Ramsden (Head of e-Learning) who has been co-ordinating their use at the University of Bath.  In the light of a recent 12-month review of the QR code service, we explore its successes and failures, and consider what form QR codes might take as a learning technology in the future.

Episode 3: Effective use of texting for education

The topic we’ve investigated for the third of our monthly e-learning podcasts is the use of texting in education.  Geraldine Jones, the e-Learning Support Officer for the Department of Education has joined us to share her experiences from a pilot of SMS technologies at the University of Bath.  In this podcast we discuss the ways in which SMS technology has been used in the Department of Education, how Txttools has been integrated with Moodle, and what your next steps would be if you were interested in using texting in your learning or support context.

Episode 2: Communicating with Students

In this second of our monthly e-learning podcasts we’ll be looking at ways of using technology to improve communication with students and the tools available to achieve this.  Abby Hill (School for Health) and Alex Hetherington (Dept of Chemical Engineering) will be talking with us about their experience of using the variety of technologies now available (Moodle, Pidgin Instant Messaging, MegaMeeting, Skype) for them to communicate with the students they work with.  We’ll be exploring how to choose the most appropriate technology,  student and staff expectations and perceptions of the tools, and recommendations for how to introduce their use to learning and teaching.

Episode 1: Using the Moodle Assignment Activity

This first in a series of podcasts from the e-Learning Team at the University of Bath will investigate the Assignment Activity in Moodle and how it can adopted for online submission of student work.  In a discussion with Jess Francombe (Doctoral student in the Department of Education) and Rachel Wood (e-Learning Development Officer in the Department of Engineering), the benefits and challenges of using the assignment activity for formative and summative assessment within two very different programmes of study will be explored.  Conclusions will be drawn that highlight opportunities for integrating its use in other teaching and learning contexts and the processes needed to ensure successful implementation.

University of Bath e-learning podcast

This series of podcasts aims to support practitioners in using technology in their teaching and learning and to develop an understanding of good practice by highlighting examples of the use of technology at the University of Bath.

These monthly podcasts will:  give updates on news from the University of Bath e-learning team; provide advice, guidance and links to further information on using technology; and explore the enhancement of learning through technology in discussions with staff from a variety of contexts across the University.
